Welcome New Chinese Students enrolled in Fall 2007

Life and Apartment

Hello, new friends, Welcome to UIC. First, please check the UIC CHINESE STUDENT FAQs built by previous CSSA member.

A brief description about what you suppose to do after you arrive summarized by Zanwen Chen.

As the housing, ask helps from your friends in Chicago if you have. Or register UIC Chinese mailing-list and there are lots of renting/sublease information on it. You can also contact people for a temp place (short term sublease) to stay when you are in China. Then you can find apartment after you arrive in UIC. Also ask your roommates or landlord whether they can pick up you. Try to arrive 8-10 days before the new term begins.

To Chinese students from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and other countries:

We have a volunteer Yury Lui who graduated from UIC several years ago. He will be the contact person for the Chinese students from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan or other countries. Please contact him at ylui@uicalumni.org if you need helps. He can speak cantonese.

Pickup Service:

To new students: CSSA will try its best (cannot guarantee though) to arrange a pickup for you from the airport only. Please give us your contact and flight information in details by rigister in the New Students Register System . Usually you should pay the gasoline and parking fee(like $15) to who pick up you.

Special Thanks to Mr. Ding in LoudClear.com for donating 9000 minutes phone cards to the new students and our pickup service. These cards will be distributed to the new students from outside of US Only. So that the new students can contact with the person who will pick you up if the airplane is late. The card number will be sent to your email account after a pickup is arranged for you. Please don't release it to others or use it for other purposes.

From the experiences of previous pickup service, we found some new students will contact several people for pick up. We understand your concern but make sure to notify the person CSSA arranged the pickup for you BEFORE you leave China.

To old members: We will appreciate it very much if you can provide pickup service for the new students. You will become our honor member, which gives you privilege to attend the activities (like spring festival party) and discount if possible. A meeting and dinner will be prepared for pickup for all the volunteers. (Important Notice: The driver should have his or her own car insurance and medical insurance. CSSA has no responsibility for accident).

Please contact cssfa_uic@yahoo.com with your available time. Or you can choose to pickup someone from the name list below or response the announcement in the mailing list.

LoudClear.com's phonecard access number:

30 min phonecard access number: 312-281-0050(Zone 1), 773-905-0015(Zone10), 773-938-9906(Zone4)

773-922-9903(Zone5), 773-915-9916(Zone7), 800-574-7568(toll free)

Note that the minutes shown above is based on local access number. Try to use the local access number whenever possible. And if you use 800 number in a coin phone(chinglish) in the airport, The minutes will be much less (around 11min). So we suggest you prepare some quarters($0.25 coin) and use local access number. However, feel free to use 800 when you want to contact the pickup driver in O'Hare. Good Luck!
